Use Edit Area
Edit Area lets you paint over part of an image and describe the change you want, ideal for removing objects, adding details, or fixing small areas with AI
Edit Area is an AI-powered brush tool that lets you change one specific part of an image, like removing an object, adding something new, or fixing a detail, without regenerating the whole picture. Paint over what you want to change, describe the edit in a prompt, and generate the result in place.
Use Edit Area instead of a whole-image prompt (like Remix) whenever you only want one part of an image to change. Since you're pointing the AI at an exact spot, you get a more precise result and avoid burning tokens on a regeneration that might alter parts of the image you wanted to keep.
Before you start
Edit Area is available on every plan, but generating an edit uses tokens, the same way other AI generations do. The exact cost depends on which AI model you pick from the model picker, and the cost for your selected model is shown before you generate, so there are no surprises. Make sure you have a single image selected on your canvas, and that you have enough tokens left on your plan. See Tokens in Kittl for details.
Open Edit Area
Select the image on your canvas.
In the contextual taskbar, open the more menu and choose Edit Area. You'll also find it listed under Tools in the right panel.
Choosing Edit Area opens the AI input box at the bottom of your canvas. This is where you'll type your prompt and pick an AI model to use for generation.
Paint your selection
With Add selected in the right panel (it's on by default), drag over the object or area you want to change. Your strokes appear as a blue overlay so you can see exactly what's selected.
If your selection spills onto a part of the image you want to leave alone, click Subtract and paint back over that spot to remove it from the selection, no need to start over.
Use the Size slider to make your brush bigger or smaller for tighter detail work.
Keep adding strokes for as many separate areas as you need. You don't have to generate after each one, you can select several spots on the same image before writing your prompt.
Describe your edit and generate
The AI input box shows your masked image as a reference thumbnail while you paint.
Type what you want to happen in the area(s) you painted, for example "remove the coffee cup" or "replace the sky with a sunset."
Optionally, click the magic wand icon in the AI input box to enhance your prompt before you generate.
Optionally, pick a different AI model from the model picker in the AI input box (for example, Nano Banana, Nano Banana 2, or Nano Banana 2 Lite). The token cost updates based on which one you choose.
Check the token cost, shown when you pick a model or when you hover over the up arrow (send) button, before you generate.
Click the arrow up button to generate, or just press Enter.
While your edit generates
The edit keeps generating in the background, so you're free to keep working while you wait. A green Area edited confirmation appears above the canvas once it's done, and the image updates automatically.
If you copy, cut, or duplicate the image while it's still generating, the new copies keep the original image. Only the object you started the edit on picks up the result.
Troubleshooting
I don't see Edit Area in the more menu.
Make sure you've selected a single image first. Edit Area works on one image at a time, not on groups or artboards.
I don't have enough tokens to generate.
If you're on the free plan, you'll need to upgrade to a paid plan to keep using Edit Area. On Pro, Expert, or Max, you can either purchase extra tokens or upgrade to a higher tier for more monthly tokens (Max already gets the highest allotment, so purchasing extra tokens is your option there). My result has a gray background instead of transparency.
AI models can't generate transparent areas, so those areas get filled with a neutral gray placeholder instead. Run Background Remover afterward if you need transparency back.
The image looks unchanged right after the loading state ends.
There can be a short delay between the loading animation finishing and the new image appearing. Give it a moment before trying again.
I duplicated the image while it was generating, and the copy doesn't have my edit.
That's expected. Copies made mid-generation keep the original image. Only the source object receives the finished edit.
Common questions
What's the difference between Edit Area and Edit Cutout?
Edit Area uses AI to add, remove, or replace content based on a prompt you write, generating new pixels for the area you brush over. Edit Cutout is manual: it erases or restores pixels that already exist in the image, like touching up your own erase strokes or bringing back part of a photo after removing its background. Use Edit Area when you want AI to create something new, and Edit Cutout when you want direct control over existing pixels.
Can I undo just part of an edit?
No. Undo reverts the whole edit at once, back to the image as it was before you generated.
Example prompts to try
Remove something: "Remove the text from the label" (paint just the text, not the whole product, so the rest of the packaging stays untouched).
Add something in a specific spot: "Add ducks" after selecting an area in the illustration, so they land exactly where you brushed.
Match the scene: "Change the balloon in the middle to the same green as the frog," letting Edit Area pull the color from elsewhere in the same image.
