Use Shape tools
Create rectangles, ellipses, polygons, and stars, then customize proportions, sides, and points for fast vector layouts.
Draw rectangles, ellipses, polygons, and stars directly on the canvas, then fine-tune sides, points, and corner rounding without switching tools. Reach for these when you need a precise, resizable geometric shape for a logo, icon, or layout, rather than a premade graphic.
Draw a shape
Select the shape tool in the bottom toolbar, then pick a shape from the dropdown: Rectangle (R), Ellipse (O), Polygon, or Star.
Drag on the canvas to draw the shape at the size you want.
Hold Shift while dragging to constrain the shape to equal proportions, like a perfect square or circle.
Hold Option/Alt while dragging to draw the shape outward from its center point.
Click once, without dragging, to place the shape at a default size.
Customize sides, points, and corners
Select a polygon or star, and its right panel adds two fields next to width and height:
Sides/points: type a number, or click the up and down arrows next to the field, to add or remove sides on a polygon or points on a star.
Corner radius: type a value, click the up and down arrows next to the field, or drag the round handles that appear directly on the shape's outline, to round every corner or point at once.
Expected outcome
Rectangles and ellipses appear ready to style. Polygons and stars also show their sides and corner radius fields in the right panel, so you can keep reshaping them after they're on the canvas, without redrawing from scratch.
Common questions
What's the difference between shape tools and the Illustrations panel?
Shape tools, in the bottom toolbar, draw a fresh rectangle, ellipse, polygon, or star from scratch. The Illustrations panel, opened from the left toolbar, is a library of premade shape graphics you drag onto the canvas instead. Use shape tools when you need a precise, resizable geometric shape, and browse Illustrations when you want ready-made artwork.
Can I draw a straight line with the shape tools?
No, there's no line shape in this set. Use the pen tool instead and hold Shift while placing a point to snap a straight horizontal, vertical, or 45-degree line.
