Fix an editor that's frozen or not responding
If the Kittl editor freezes or stops responding while you're editing, here's how to narrow down the cause, from a quick refresh to browser, device, and project-specific fixes.
If the Kittl editor stops reacting to clicks or won't update your design, something is preventing it from responding, usually a browser issue, a device running low on resources, or a large, complex project. Most cases are temporary and clear up with the steps below.
Troubleshooting steps
1. Refresh the page
Start with a hard refresh to reset the editor.
Mac: Cmd + Shift + R
Windows: Ctrl + Shift + R
Then reopen your project.
2. Try a couple of quick resets
The editor may still be processing something in the background, such as loading a large element, applying an effect, or generating an AI image. It's also possible its focus got stuck on an element or panel, which can look like a freeze.
Wait 10 to 20 seconds without clicking or switching tabs, then check if it's responding again.
If it's still stuck, click an empty area outside the design canvas, then try selecting an element again.
3. Narrow down what's freezing
If the freeze started right after a specific action, like typing, resizing, or applying an effect, try a different, simpler action instead, such as moving an element or changing its color.
If only that one action freezes and it doesn't connect to the internet (for example, moving or resizing an element), it's likely too heavy for the editor to process right now. Skip ahead to step seven to confirm that and get tips on complex designs and effects.
If only that one action freezes and it does connect to the internet (for example, generating an AI image), work through steps four to six first. A blocked connection, extension, or VPN can look identical to the editor struggling with a heavy design.
If every action freezes, the issue is more likely with your browser or device. Continue with the steps below.
4. Rule out your browser
Incognito mode disables cached data and most browser extensions, so it's a quick way to check whether your browser setup is the cause.
First, try Incognito mode:
Open a new Incognito window in Chrome (Cmd + Shift + N on Mac, Ctrl + Shift + N on Windows).
Go to kittl.com and sign in.
Open your project and try the action that was freezing.
If it responds normally here, cached data or an extension is the likely cause.
Then disable your extensions to narrow it down further:
Open your browser settings and go to Extensions.
Disable all extensions temporarily.
Refresh the page and open your project again.
Once the editor responds, re-enable your extensions one by one to find the one causing the issue.
5. Turn off your VPN or proxy
A VPN or proxy can slow down or block the requests the editor needs to respond.
Turn off your VPN or proxy.
Refresh the page.
Try using the editor again.
6. Free up memory
If your device is running low on memory, the editor can freeze or become slow to respond.
Close unused browser tabs.
Close other applications, especially video calls, streaming, or other design tools.
Refresh the page and reopen your project.
7. Check whether it's one project or all of them
This helps narrow down whether the issue is with a specific file or something broader.
Open a different project, or create a new blank one.
Try the same action that was freezing, or a similar one.
If it freezes there too, the issue is more likely a browser or device problem. Skip to step eight.
If it's fine in the other project, the design you started in is likely large or complex. The editor can freeze temporarily if a project contains large image files, many elements or layers, AI-generated images, or a large canvas size.
Let the project fully load before editing.
Avoid rapid clicking or repeated actions while it's processing.
Remove unused elements once the editor responds again.
8. Update your browser or try another device
The Kittl editor works best on an up-to-date version of Chrome. Make sure your browser and operating system are current, then try:
Opening the project in a different browser
Opening it on another device
Switching to a different internet connection
